Abstract
Academic pressure, memorization targets, and social adaptation within the pesantren environment are integral parts of the complex adjustment process. This study aims to describe the self-adjustment of Qur’an-memorizing students residing in Islamic boarding schools while pursuing university education. This research employs a qualitative method with a phenomenological approach. The participants are Qur’an-memorizing students living in Pondok Pesantren “X”, Laweyan, Surakarta, and currently studying at UIN Raden Mas Said Surakarta. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. Data analysis used Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), involving stages such as repeated reading, initial noting, emergence of themes, and the development of superordinate themes. The results indicate that students face various physical and psychological challenges, yet are able to adjust through three main strategies: 1) adapting to the pesantren’s structured schedules and routines; 2) conforming to the values and norms of the pesantren environment; and 3) mastering self-regulation through time management, emotional regulation, and spiritual strengthening. Factors influencing their self-adjustment include internal factors (psychological condition, motivation, and personal maturity) and external factors (social support, pesantren environment, and family).
